Doctoral Studies

Doctoral studies, forming the third cycle of studies, are conducted by the Department of Philology according to current law, these Regulations, and the University of Ioannina Doctoral Studies Regulations (Government Gazette, Issue B’ 6028/01.11.2024).
Doctoral programs aim to foster original research and contribute significantly to the development of knowledge in at least one academic field. They lead to the award of a PhD after the preparation and successful defense of a dissertation. Programs include the mandatory doctoral dissertation on a topic related to the Department of Philology or its collaborating Departments, and may also include a doctoral coursework component, involving attendance and successful completion of a series of courses or other educational/research activities.
In certain cases, the Department Assembly of Philology may require, based on the recommendation of the Candidates Selection Committee, that a doctoral candidate successfully completes a preparatory course cycle without ECTS credits.
